Frequently Asked Questions
How can I contact The Coast Track?
You can contact us by phone or email. Our ‘contact us’ area has all the details.
Can I walk these trails on my own?
Yes you can, however most people choose not to. We organise everything for you, including meeting you in Sydney CBD and returning you to your hotel, very comfortable camping, outstanding food along the way, all accompanied by our professional guides. You don’t carry your luggage or your mobile phone - just water, your camera and a sense of adventure.
How fit do I need to be?
If you already walk for fitness, swim a little or play golf you will manage our walks with ease. It isn’t about setting distance records, rather walking is the best way to see some of the most beautiful parts of Sydney. Our tours are rated as moderate level trips, some parts easy and some a little more challenging. The maximum daily distance is 15km which requires 4-5 hours of walking. We are outside all day, walking, taking a dip or relaxing with a glass of Australian wine. So if you are active, enjoy life and like to see the world then you are fit enough for us!
How far will we walk each day?
Depending on which journey you choose, the trips cover a maximum of 15km per day which requires 4-5 hours of walking.
Do I need travel insurance?
We recommend everyone that travels with The Coast Track has travel insurance.
Am I able to travel with a pre-existing medical condition?
In most cases, yes you can. We will require you to fill in a confidential medical form and seek your doctor’s approval.
What do I have to carry?
You carry only a day pack containing up to two litres of water, a weather proof jacket and any personal items such as a camera and sunglasses. We can provide a day pack for you to use, if you don’t have one. The rest of your belongings are transferred on ahead, waiting for you at camp.
How many bags can I bring?
Please limit your luggage to one medium-sized suitcase. Mark your luggage tag with your name, address and phone number.
Will I need special shoes?
We suggest walkers to have solid, closed toe walking shoes or hiking boots, preferably with ankle support. Sports shoes, trainers or runners are not ideal to complete these walks.
What will I receive before I travel with The Coast Track?
When you book and pay a deposit, you will receive some information about your trip and The Royal National Park. Upon receipt of your final payment, we send out comprehensive travel information of what to bring and what you can expect on your journey. This can come to you either by email or by post, and will come either directly to you or care of your travel agent, depending on how you booked with us.
Can I use a travel agent to make my booking?
Yes all our journeys can be booked through your travel agent.
How far in advance do I need to reserve my journey?
The further in advance that you book, the greater availability of dates you'll find. We recommend reserving at least three months prior to your planned journey date. A deposit of AU$400 secures your space.
Does the Coast Track cater for special dietary requirements?
If we know in advance, we can cater for most dietary requirements. We include space for this on our booking form which each traveller needs to complete, to reserve a place on our walks.
Where do I join the tour?
The Coast Track operates walks in Sydney, Australia. Our tours start and end at your hotel in Sydney CBD or a predetermined meeting point. We will confirm the pick up time and place when we receive your final payment. You need to make your own arrangements to meet at this point if you are not staying in a city hotel.
Our journeys depart early, so we recommend interstate or international customers stay in Sydney the night before to ensure a timely pick up.
Will I have mobile phone coverage?
Mobile coverage in most of The Royal National Park will be limited or non-existent. It should not be assumed you will have coverage. Our guides carry satellite phones for use in case of emergency only.
What language are the tours conducted in?
All our tours are conducted in English. Other languages may be catered for by arrangement on our Tailored Journeys series.
What is included on my walk?
We provide full standing tents, a comfortable bed, 100% cotton linen, a complimentary massage ( for overnight guests), all meals, a glass of wine with dinner, morning and afternoon tea, use of weather proof jackets and day packs, the services of our professional guides, entrance fees to the National Park and transfers to and from Sydney CBD to join your walk.
At your own expense will be your own personal spending on souvenirs.
We like to keep our trip size small and we average 6-8 people (a maximum of 10 on our overnight trips).
We absolutely welcome single travellers on our journeys. People travelling on a single basis will twin share a tent with one other ( same sex ) walker.
What is Twin Share?
Twin share means two people sharing a tent. This will mean either a couple sharing a queen size bed or two people in one room each having a separate single bed.
What are the walking tracks like?
Main roads are not in our vocabulary! We spend our time on disignated walking tracks, some fire trails, and sandy beaches. Understand that what goes up must come down.
What type of weather can I expect?
We schedule our walks for September through till May. Walking at this time provides fresh mornings and evenings, and warm and dry days with an occasional brief shower later in the day or evening. Walking in December and January can be warm ( 30-35 celcius ) - therefore we may start our morning a little eariler take more frequent breaks during the day.
What do I wear on the walk?
You do not have to look like a professional bushwalker. Come in comfortable clothing, hiking boots, a sun hat and bring a wet weather jacket (just in case). You will be given a detailed list of items to bring with you prior to your trip.
